"We're moving to the West Indies"!

Our father was in banking, doing the Los Angeles banking thing for over 25 years, when one day in late 1979 he came home...and said just that.

Being two young surfers from Manhattan Beach, California, it was pure stoke! Our family of five moved to Montserrat, in the West Indies, in 1980, for a total of 12 years. From what we had discovered, the island had no surfers, and had never seen the sport before. It was an amazing experience for the two of us to have pioneered surfing on Montserrat at the ages of 17 and 19. Something that really doesn't happen to offten.

Dad and Carrll flew out to visit the island. Carrll had told me he had been surfing the East Coast alone, and found a random photo at a souvenir shop that showed a perfect empty right-hander at the bay below where dad had just bought our house...what news!!!  Could it get any better?  YES! Carrll and I discovered, named, and surfed every spot on the little 39sq mile island!  Looking back, it was any surfers dream! read more...
